Remodeling is more than cosmetic or repairs. It is construction to improve the function of an existing use in a space such as a kitchen or create a new space such as a family room.
As in custom building, we first determine the needs of the family and the function of the space. A kitchen may require removing existing walls to expand the space to create an open, contemporary kitchen with an island. Unlike new construction the existing building imposes constraints on the space which creates the need to utilize every square foot efficiently. Space may be found under adjacent stairs or in wall cavities.
Good design considers the detailing of the new space with respect to the rest of the home to develop a visual consistence.
Lighting, both natural and artificial, is a very important element in a remodel. One does not want TV areas over lit or kitchens that are under lit.
Careful selection of materials gives best value for the budget. Color and scale often are more important than materials. Alternatives should be considered to create best value.
