Design Challenge
This custom home presented several design challenges. This family had three teenage children; the husband wanted a shop; and the wife enjoyed cooking, so a large house was needed. However, the location was in the Lake Whatcom Watershed which restricts the amount of lot coverage making it necessary to design a three-story house to provide the space required. There were also severe height restrictions.
To reduce the height of the building and minimize the visual two story element we used a mansard roof design, allowing the slope of the top of the roof to be fairly flat. A steeper roof section could be extended from the top level to the lower level. The finished grade was raised by use of an elaborate water fall and foutain system.
The rear view shows the three story height. The deck help reduce some of the height and volume.
The view from the den by the use of windows to the floor captures the water fall and ponds.
The high detailed ceramic faced fireplace reduced the two story volume of the living room. An open walkway connected the upper two living areas.
A large professional kitchen featuring an island with a step counter. The cabinets have full extention drawers for easy access to pots ann pans and other items.
Traditional stair details with wrought iron pickets in the stail rails.
The front walk and driverway were constructed with eco pavers which allow the storm water to perculate into ground and not run off.
